I wouldn't use silicone rubber. The stuff you get at the hardware stores
releases
acetic acid as it cures. If you KNOW that the paint on your car will not
be
affected, go ahead. Maybe it won't cause premature rust. I know it will
attack
electronic circuit boards in the right environment. Eats right thru the
copper. They make a special non-acetic acid curing silicone for circuit
board
applications. I think you can also get it at the pet shop for resealing
aquariums. Seems that the fish don't like the acid either. Throws off
the ph of the water I think?

The double-stick foam tape that you can get at the auto parts store
should
work fine. That's what it is made for. Make sure that you de-wax the
surface
before applying. Not only is it the right stuff, it doesn't slide around
while
waiting to cure. Also 30 seconds after application, you can be out
driving
like these cars like they were meant to be.
