The pump should prime itself if it's in decent condition. However, if
the oli has drained out of the cooler, it might take a while for the
pressure to come up.
Before going too much further, I would suggest checking the bypass
valve to make sure it's properly installed. You can do this in a few
minutes without a lot of bother. The valve is a plug and spring under a
large bolt-like object on the right side of the engine.
