The 'squirrel cage' fan is simply the later 70s fan which pushes quite a bit
more air. You should pull the heater switch and test it for resistance, and
disassemble and clean the contacts if needed (mine was about 25% resistance).
Also try reversing the leads to the heater motor, one way will push more
air than the other.
Of course none of that will help if your heater core is stuffed. Are the
hoses to/from the core nice 'n toasty?
Check the fresh air vent behind the console - mine was quite drafty so I
bought one of those magnetic vent covers (remove the chrome thing, it
won't stick to that) to seal off the fresh air intake and that helped
the cabin temp a bit too.
