The accursed heater control

Any clues to the best angle of approach to refit the heater control (Off,
Interior, Screen) bottom right of the dash?  I had a devil of a job getting
it out, but I just pulled and twisted until it came free.  The trouble is a
small 1" square crossmember that goes across the car just behind the dash.

If it's just a question of pushing and twisting until it goes back in then
so be it...
