Gary,

I would have wrote earlier but with work problems, I haven't had a chance.

The speedo could be bad - the noise would indicate such (I figure the noise
itself comes from the problem). If the right angle drive went bad, it would
be more of a quiet death.

The bright side is that if the speedo went to zero whatever was going bad
is probably now bellyup. Which makes it easier to find the problem.

You could remove the speedo (with the speedo cable hanging out the speedo
hole) and take the car for a short spin - see if the cable turns. If that
works, the speedometer would be suspect. I can loan you one of mine - I
have a 1280 and a 1000, I'm not sure which is in the car. But the other one
hasn't been used for several years and it wasn't very stable. The needle
bounced around a lot so I figured it was approaching its death - but it
will show you if your speedo is bad.

But if the speedo cable doesn't turn - then the cable or the right angle
drive is bad. You will have to remove and test them. The testing is easy,
removal is tougher.

OD cable in hopes that it would quiet the god-awful noise from the dash to
no avail. Noise continued until the speedo dropped to 0 and stayed there.
When I was driving during the noisy phase, I could feel the vibrations on
the face of the speedo. The cable enters the firewall at the master
cyclinders and travels in the dash to the rear of the speedo and enters the
speedo as close to a straight entry as I can. No right angle drive on the
speedo.

fellow lister a few months ago and has never seemed to work properly.
Could the right angle drive on the transmission be bad? How would I know?
