My 73 has both ports facing forward. On my spare pump I note that 'TOP' is
embossed into the casting by the ports in such a postion that one might
easily assume that the ports should face upwards. However the opposite side
of the same casting (i.e. either side of the 'delivery flow smoothing device
cover') is also embossed 'TOP', meaning that if one 'TOP' faced upwards, the
other would be facing downwards. I can only conclude that said 'delivery
smoothing device cover' should be at the top i.e. both ports facing
forwards.
Which was where I came in.
(Shades of the Naval shells where "the bottom of the shell shall be clearly
marked 'TOP'")
