I have read that when towing an automatic trans car you should disconnect the
driveshaft.  Apparently when it is in neutral, the pump is run by the shaft
and that's not good.

I towed my '77 Midget about 60 miles on a U-Haul tow dolly, rear wheels on the
ground, driveshaft connected.  No ill effects.  These tow dollies must be just
the thing for front wheel drive automatics.  The U-Haul store has over 100 of
them available!
