The diodes will be in the back of the alternator housing.  They might be
three little metal cans, or might look like a flat pack with four heavy
conductor leads.  They will be mounted firmly against the housing for a
heat sink.  If the parts are servicable, you can (shound be able to) buy
the diode pack for under $10.  Lots of the newer model alternators (since
the mid-80's) are non-servicable.  Some of the parts are welded in place
rather than screw connected, so you destroy the parts during disassembly.
In that case a rebuilt unit is about $100 exchange.  They call that progress.
