I have become a little bored over the movement of various electrons, and
the directions the flow in, so how about a new thread?
Many of us have, in years gone by, 'fixed' a MG to sell it, or to fool
an examiner, ( Mot in the UK.) Here are some I have used, and others I
have heard of.....could make good reading if a few more people add their
'expertise', and act as warnings to the less experienced:- ( NOTE these
are BODGES, not CURES.)
TRICKS OF THE TRADE...............
An old one this, low oil pressure with a hot engine? Try to sell the car
with that fault, just remove the bulb from the dash light.
But what if there is an oil pressure guage? Well, on the XPAG, 'A'
series and 'B' series, all respond to a few washers behind the oil
pressure releif valve spring to 'boost' running pressure.
But what if the engine is so worn, when hot the pressure is STILL low?
Simply take out the oil filter element, this will 'remove' a restriction
from the oil flow, and certainly boost pressure! ( Ruin the engine
though in a very short time....)
Squealing water pump? Add a little brake fluid to the radiator water,
'Dot' does not matter, as long as it is water soluable. This
'lubricates' the worn carbon seal in the pump, for a few days.
Feed a couple of pairs of nylons, or even tights, into a noisy
differential in the axle. Quietens it long enough to sell the car!
Worn king pin bushes? How useful you will find a soft drinks can, (
Coke, Pepsi,) as cut up it makes excellent 'shims' to wind around the
worn pin, and slide up into the stub-axle. Grease it up, the tester will
never know!!!!! Works for excess end-play as well. ( Note, I still use
such cans as shims, cheap and easy to cut, and from .003" to .012",
depending on drinks and use, ie CAT food.)
Noisy camshaft chain on an early MG Midget, also known as 'A' Series
Death Rattle, ( or Morris Minor,). Remove the chain cover and the chain,
pull out the 'rubber-rings' that 'tension' the chain. Wind some
bind-a-twine rope in, refit the rubber rings, then the chain and cover.
Keeps the chain quiet for about 100 miles. ( Twine used to tie up straw
bales,ect.)
BUYING a car, but you want to get the price down? Run a pencil line down
one plug, causing it to miss-fire. ( The carbon line will allow the
spark to escape.) Good trick to play on a GOOD friend at a meeting as
well.....
