Hi all,
I'm currently rebuilding a set of carbs for a MGA recently
purchased and I've got a few questions:
When I got the car the carbs were leaking profusely from the
float bowl connection. After installing the new rubber washers
from the rebuild kit they were leaking like a sieve. I noticed in the
Moss catalog that the "late type" banjo bolt arrangement seemed
like a better method so I retrofitted it along with another set of
rubber washers. NO leaks... I noticed that the rubber washers
ordered separately are different (look better) than the ones in the
kit so maybe this alone fixed the problem.
The first question concerns the float level setting using the
late type of banjo bolt (Moss # 372-190). Since it lowers the
entire float bowl assembly about 1/4" do I need to compensate
for this in any way when I set the float level? I assume this
whole thing works on the principle of a fluid seeking its own level??
If so wouldn't lowering the bowl cause the the gas level to be
too low in the jet??? Maybe I don't understand how this float
setting works.
Anyways, I set the float using the standard 7/16" using the
needle/seat in the rebuild kit. But things are WAY too rich even
with the jets fully up. Unless I've really messed up setting the
float level I can only think that the jets are leaking at the top.
I used the rubber o-rings in the rebuild kit (4 per jet). Do these things
work or should I get some cork glands? The only way to
get things to run almost OK is to drop the needle shoulder
down from the piston a little over 1/16" but this doesn't seem
right. But, at least, I can get the RPMs to drop when I lift the
piston.
All answers gratefully accepted - except any that suggest
changing to a Weber.
