Steve: In the case of my MGA, I believe it's a combination of gas with too low an octane rating and an engine with carbon deposits that glow red hot after a drive. When I add octane booster to the gasoline, it doesn't run on. Perhaps the carb mixture also contributes to your problem (too lean?)
