Ed,
You're doing a remarkable job typing, since you obviously have one
hand full with that crack pipe you're smoking!! If you think you
could do a full ground-up restoration with a new body shell and EVER
have the resulting car appreciate in value, you're a loon! Figure
you would have $3500 in the bodyshell, probably at least $2000 more
for a COMPLETE engine rebuild, another $2000 for a modern, clearcoat
paint job on all the nooks and crannies of above bodyshell, and god
knows how much for the rebuilds/restorations/replacement of the
interior, transmission, suspension, top, weatherstripping, chrome,
glass, etc, etc, etc. If you do everything up right, and do all the
work yourself, you would still conservatively put $20-30 thousand in
building a 'B' from the ground up. Think it would ever be worth
what you put into parts and labor? Better refill your pipe.
And for the 'new' 'B still being around long after the MIATA (see,
I'm not so afraid of them that I can't bear to type the word...)
rusted away; again, you're a loon. Even with the new electrophoretic
primer on the 'B' bodyshells, I would still put any modern Japanese
car's rust resistance well above an MGB's.
