I agree that the UK 1500 engine was the strongest, but the US spec 1500
was less powerful than the 1275. In the Gold Portfolio you refer to, it
gives the highest bhp for US spec as 65, for the 1275 engine. The 1500
dropped down to 55.5 bhp (50 in California), nearly a 15% drop in power;
pretty significant.
The UK 1500, on the other hand (again, according to the Gold Portfolio),
delivered 66 bhp; slightly more than the1275, a true 100 mph car, but
the 1275 was a 94 mph car, so that's only a small improvement. Where
the 1500 really improved was in torque, but that's another discussion...
