I, too, have attended this event, and it's definitely worth the time!
One tip, though: If you plan to stay for the weekend, camping on the
grounds can be pretty cold and damp in September, and you'll end up
going at least 30 miles out of town for a motel room, if you don't
already have reservations. We got lucky and ended up staying just
outside of Penn Yan, so it wasn't too long a drive to Watkins Glen every
day.
While you're there, check out the Glen itself (I mean the park, not the
racetrack). It certainly is beautiful & they have a laser show at dusk
(or, at least, they did when I was there a few years ago)
