Adrian,

Maybe you could have a broken exhaust valve spring. This could cause valve
float at high RPM.

Also, I am slightly confused. You have a 75 Midget, I believe yet you are
describing a car with and SU pump, SU Carbs, and points. None of these
were on a Spitfidget.

Speaking of Spitfidgets, Stephanie wrote that hers died. I would guess
that the Lucas electronic ignition has decided that it owes the world
nothing more. I had the same problem on a Spit**re where it was first
intermittent and finally quit completely.

I use a very simple system to align my wheels. I have two square cedar
boards (some other material may be better- mine have warped slightly)
about the same size as the tires. Come alignment time, I hold one against
one tire and the SO does the same on the other side. I measure From
outside to outside of these squares along the garage floor in front of and
behind the wheels. This gives me a very accurate alignment measurement.
It is fast, too. It does require two people but the second person's job is
quite simple and it only take 1 minute per measurement session. Wire wheel
cars may require a hole cut in the middle of the square to clear the
spinner.
