What did people 40 years ago think about Russia? If they did some
thinking between dropping atom bombs a few miles from the city
of Las Vegas, or prescribing Thalidomyde... or... or... or...
The knowledge of the present wasn't around in the past. It's
a self evident statement really, but it applies.

As an addendum to the eloquent observations of my Montreal-based
friend... why the "they" and "us" mentality? Again, this is
something that strikes me (and most Canadians) very oddly about
US citizens.
Notions of democracy and personal freedoms and
the government of the people are very foremost to Americans,
but they also tend to have a "they" and "us" opinion of the
governments their democracy elects.
Anecdotally, one American from this list actually emailed me
that my life was not living because as a Canadian, I am therefore
a slave to the queen. Honestly, I saved the email.
