Regarding the relationship of the water temp gauge pointer to the
temperature of the coolant: on a recent trip, my Midget seemed to be
running unusually hot. I had been adding water occasionally, but never saw
evidence of a leak, . During reassembly of the car after restoration, I
discovered the glass had come off of the gauge in storage, so considered
the possibility that the pointer had gotten moved, or the gauge was out of
calibration. To check this, I bought a candy thermometer and did some
tests on the thermostat and gauge. The 180 deg. thermostat was fully open
in a pan of water at 180 degrees F. The pointer was pointing exactly at
the "N" at 180 degrees. I immersed the temp sensor in a pan of ice and
water, and noticed that the pointer came to rest exactly in the middle
between two small dots on the gauge face. There are two other dots on the
gauge face at what I would guess to be the boiling point of water at sea
level (100 deg. C, 212 deg. F). Might be useful info. By the way, my
problem was the water pump. It started leaking shortly after this so that
I could see it.

Why can't they put manholes in the MIDDLE of the lane?
