Yeah, well, it's the natural consequence of that fabulous invention,
the graphite throw-out bearing.  The notion is that the bearing
surface used to apply pressure to the clutch is a solid chunk of
carbon, and it works via its own natural lubricity (or is that rude?)
When you don't depress the clutch, the engine is driving the laygear
in the tranny, but this uses roller bearings and is a pretty light
load.  When you depress the clutch, it transfers a huge amount of
pressure via aforesaid graphite bearing, which is a pretty heavy load.

Graphite bearings wear out pretty fast.  But, hey, that's OK, since
you have to rip your engine out every 40,000 miles anyway....  Moral
of the story is when you are waiting at traffic lights shift into
neutral and don't depress the clutch.
