When I changed the oil pump in Tintin, I just followed the recommendation
that came with the pump: I poured some oil into it before mounting,
rotated the cam a few turns, poured more oil in, and put it in place.
Once the engine was back in, I left the plugs out and cranked the
starter until I got full pressure. There was no problem.
