Thomas-
I encountered the same issues on my "B" when it came home. The P0 (add
the D if you wish) had fitted some 205-55R14's on all four corners.
Suprisingly, even these tires had no clearance problems, although they
looked (in my opinion) horrible, and resulted in very heavy steering.
I purchased some inexpensive imported radials - 185-40R14. I believe
that even these "cheap" tires still posess more cornering "grip" than
the standard MGB suspension can use. IMHO, they look great! I have
been very happy with the 10,000 miles that I have on these tires, and no
obvious signs of wear are apparent.
I should note that my car is a '77, and has a higher ride height than
the chrome bumper cars. I don't think that the lower ride would result
in clearance problems, but can't say that with 100% certainty.
FWIW-
