re sawdust in transmissions and diffs. Cf **The Grapes of Wrath**, where the
Joads go out to buy a new truck and wise old granpa removes the diff plug and
runs his finger around to check for sawdust that the salesman might have put
in there to cover up imminent diff failure due to broken gear teeth.
It is a very old trick.
