This reminds me of a college friend's Ford. Its starter motor stuck, and
I showed him how to free it by rocking the car back and forth. One night
he called me to rescue him and his girl friend from a local lover's
lane--the starter had stuck again. He told me he had stationed his girl
at the front and himself at the back, and they had rocked the car for a
half hour without freeing the starter. After getting very sweaty and out
of sorts, they had hiked to a phone. I asked what gear the car was
in. My friend, no mechanic, said he had put it in neutral, because that
made it much easier to push.
