On the advice of a friend I am looking for some additional (collective) net
wisdom. I have a '57 1500 MGA whose gearbox needs to be reconditioned, I am
thinking about replacing the gearbox with a modern 5 speed, the person who
I might buy the gearbox says he hays a reconditioned gearbox he thinks it
is a Toyota or Nissan with an adapter plate to make it fit on an MGA I
gather this is to fit on the engine side. He bought car with the idea of
restoring it to concourse condition and hence does not want this gearbox.
As you have gathered I am not that worried about originality as long as the
car looks like a standard MGA. I use the car as a daily driver; the trade
off will be if I can convert the car for roughly the same amount as the job
of reconditioning my current standard gearbox.
I intend to take it to the local MG mechanic to check it out before I
actually pay for it but some additional advice would help, at least I'll
know what questions to ask the mechanic.
Thanks
