If an alternator is run without a battery in the circuit, It assumes that the
battery is dead, and will attempt to run at max output to releive the
condition. Because it never recieves a "signal" from the battery indicated
voltage, the output continues on high, which in a very short time (minutes)
will permanatly damage the alternator, usually in the diode pac.

The alternator requires a voltage signal from the battery to regulate the
output from itself, and without this signal, will literaly work itself to
death
