Maybe a burnt exhaust valve? Do compression check and vacuum test

Subject: [Midget] backfire/pop when shifting

I'll be getting out my tools this weekend to try and find the source of a
problem with my '78 1500 California emissions Midget. Any directions in
the mean time would be appreciated.
The symptoms: Almost everytime I shift the car gives a little pop/backfire
as I let off the gas.
If I've given it a healthy push on the pedal to accelerate,
such as while merging onto the freeway, I will get a very
healthy backfire/POP between shifts.
I've replaced the air filter, put in high octane (92) gas, and fixed a
hose leak in a breather vent line running from the valve cover. I'm
getting about 23mpg (US) if that helps to decipher this. This weekend I'll
be checking the timing, squirting around the carb looking for vacuum leaks,
and generally looking for problems. Any suggestions?
Mike Jaquet (honest officer, that was a backfire, not a gunshot)
(Hmmm, late on a Friday, west coast of US, and I'm asking a question after
most people have already gone home. Oh well.)
