To all that responded, Thanks.
Compression in 1 and 2 was 40, 3 and 4 was 140. Knock went away with #2 plug
disconected.
Figgured if the head gasket was blown between 1 and 2 then while 2 was going
down on power stroke 1 would be comming up on compression stroke. Hot gasses
from 2 would pre-ignite 1 and make a major ping. Took the head off last night
and sure enough, no gasket between 1 and 2.
Checked cam travel, its ok so I can't figure out why the extra tappet
clearance. I think I might have made a small oversight the last time H had the
head off. Oil pressure is still very good so I'm going to chance cam and rod
brgs with a rebuild on the head.
You might remember it was unanimous on the list that my valve guides were bad
anyway, and I have a set of headers to install anyway, sooo....
Thanks again to all

Is your rocker shaft still attached properly? Other than that, I can't think
of an alternative that will keep you from having to tear down the engine. It
sounds serious....
I have a guess.......Perhaps you wiped some lobes off the camshaft, in which
case, there will be metal shavings in the oil. Try draining the oil, and see
what it looks like.
Let us know how it turns out............
