Elaine:
It certainly sounds like a loose or bad electrical connection or ground.
Suggest you trace the wires attached to the dim lamp and unplug and then
replug each connection you can find. I'm sure that people more knowledgeable
then me can suggest more scientific tests and even tell you the voltage and
resistance associated with the head lamp circuits, but I believe in stating
simple.
