The cover should be stuck fast. It is meant to be gooed in pretty
well with a gasket and sealant to prevent leaks. I generally whack
them a good 'un with a "soft" dead blow hammer to break the seal and
then wiggle them off. I do not advise the screwdriver/cold chisel-
stuck-in-the-groove-and-beaten method as it can damage mating
surfaces. You may well have to replace the studs anyway, as those
tend to corrode and/or stretch with repeated installations of a
thermostat. Since you are replacing them, they can be removed (oce
the cover is off) with the Deadly Vise-Grips, although if you have
access to stud wrench sockets they are more est'etic.
