The best way to check for wear in a distributor shaft, without taking it out
(and this is indeed the best way) is to use a dwell meter to check the dwell
angle. As you are checking note whether the dwell reading is fluctuating.
this can be a sign of slop in the shaft. In the same way if the dwell
reading indicates that your static setting is way out then this is also an
indication of wear as the shaft has repositioned itself when the motor is
running.
