OK, guess I have to trot out my favorites, too.
This happened to me about 15 years ago...
About a week after I bought a Datsun 1200 hatchback, the head gasket blew.
Large plume of white smoke behind the car, big-time bubbles out the radiator.
Rats!
I pulled the head, hoping it was just a gasket. When I unbolted the rocker
shaft, it came off in two pieces!
Apparently, the PO had suffered a broken rocker shaft. Rather than fix it
properly, he'd drilled through the middle, between the broken pieces, through
the head - ran a coarse-thread tap through the whole mess, and run a bolt
through it to hold it together. Long enough for me to buy it :-(.

This happened to my friend Dave:
One day, Dave bought a nice Jaguar XKE coupe. He took it to a shop for
something. They found that the PO had cut the car's frame in half at the
back to do a quickie brake repair. After finishing the repair, he'd stuck
the frame back together......with bondo. Did a good job, too - sanded,
blended, and painted. But probably not as strong as a weld :-).
