I had a problem some years back that sounds very close. After
changing Battery, 3 Alt's and then resorting to my local service
station the problem was fixed. Seems that there was a break in the
fuseable (sp?) link, that was caused an occasional discharge. Don't
know a lot about MG wiring yet!!, but I'm sure some one out there can
confirm.
