It sounds like you have a problem with the radio. The antenna works the
same way for AM as it does for FM. If you are getting reception with
one or both the antenna is working.
Try this: Unplug the antenna and see if you lose all reception. If not,
check to see if you have continuity between the antenna and the inner
wire on the coax. And check to see if you have continuity between the
outer casing conductor and the frame of the car.
If this is all okay borrow another radio and try it. Or start enjoying TOP 40!
and talk radio.
