I'd say absolutely none at all, with hydraulic lifters, that is. However
mine started ticking (just one) louder and louder after several tens of
thousands of miles. Eventually I replaced cam and lifters (showing
negligible wear in what was a very clean engine) and it made no difference
at all. An engine rebuilder opined that he didn't know what it was, but it
sounded 'orrible, and he couldn't guarantee to eliminate it after a rebuild.
Opinions were variously worn lifter bore and loose cylinder liner (although
these latter should be clamped between the head and a lip at the bottom of
the casting hole for the liner. Occasionally I could hear the tapping
gradually go up and down in volume, as if with the tappet rotating which of
course it is supposed to. After a journey of 200 motorway miles or so, some
touring, and driving back home on the motorway the sound had gone, but came
back a bit the following winter with shorter journeys. Went again following
another longish trip, and is now barely noticeable, except on some hot
starts about 20 mins after switching off, for a few minutes.
