The easy trick is to install an Autometer guage :-) 
That is what I did, and in combination with an
Autometer speedometer, it looks pretty good.  Plus
it's great to be able to actually read the guages at
night.

There has been a lot written about this on the V8 BBS
at www.mgcars.org.uk.  Look in the archives. 

There is also a web page about the tach conversion by
Leon Zak, chairman of our local club (whom I met last
night).  http://www.zaks.com/mgb/  Personally, I felt
it a little beyond my realm of electrical knowledge.
