Also use yellow teflon tape for gas leaks.  This is thicker tape then  the 
white for water or the blue styles.  The leak can also be from the  sending 
unit and there is a gasoline resistant gasket sealer to be applied to  the 
surface made by Locktite/permatex High tack #98H or Aviation #3H.   Aviation 
worked for me.

If the leak is in fact the drain plug and not  something higher on the 
tank as Doug suggest, RectoSeal 5, sold anywhere  that carries plumbing 
supplies will stop the leak if you apply it to the  plug threads.  This 
is the stuff I use on fuel pump fittings that  defy any other  fix.
