I had a similar problem and I kept blaming the carbs. The car was hard
to start, cold-blooded and refused to idle below 12-1500rpm. Adjusting
the valves helped some but the real culprit was bad spark plug wires.
Someone had put in an incorrect set of carbon core wires. I replaced
them with a set of good copper core wires and my problems were instantly
cured. I've heard somewhere that 90% of all carb problems are
electrical and I tend to believe it is true.
