So I have mine adjusted so I see the adjacent lanes. You see
very little of the lane directly behind you. Most of the time I can just
spot part of the rear fender. They are used mainly to check for traffic
off the rear quarters before changing lanes. That's why most modern
vehicles use a convex mirror on the passenger side.
It always amazes me how many folks adjust the outside mirrors so they can
see the sides of their vehicles and the lane behind them, and have no clue
whats
coming up in adjacent lanes. My wife is among these, but I've given up
trying to change her.
I adjust mine so I can see the rear corner of my vehicle if I lean all the
way in either direction. I'm much more concerned about those folks in the
other lanes than those directly behind me.

same people who
laugh at science fiction listen to weather forecasts and economists?
