In the process of rebuilding my 1950 MG-TD I've encountered an issue with my
master brake cylinder. It has been sleeved (brass) and I'm using silicone
(DOT 5) brake fluid. The new cups, seals, valve, etc. were assembled wet
and some fluid was added to the reservoir. Not all the brake lines have
been connected. When pressing the brake pedal, just to get a feel for how
much rod adjustment was needed, I got a bit too eager and nearly bottomed
the piston. Now I find it won't return on its own (I used a bike pump to
pressurize the open brake line to push the piston back into position). Is
this normal? Or is my spring too weak (new) or my secondary seal too tight?
I realize there will be some back pressure from the wheel cylinders that
would assist returning the piston when the system is operational but I can't
see how I can pump fluid to the cylinders if the piston sticks as it does
now. Any suggestions?
