" I don't know what the pitch is, but 55 mph is the speed at which the
engine begins to sound scary and the car starts to shake. In the old days,
brave souls used to take them all the way up to 80 mph. Don't try this
unless you have at least 5K of break-in on the engine, and wheels that have
managed to stay round after 50 years. "

I'm not musical enough to tell you what pitch a note is but if the music
fits my ear, it's good for me and that's what my TD does right through the
rev range. At 4000 rpm she is happiest, just sings along! With a 4.875:1
diff and crossply tyres, that equates to about 55mph (88 km/h). There should
be no vibration or body shake; no "scary" feelings. If the engine was
balanced when rebuilt, there will be no vibration from that department and
if the suspension is in good shape and the wheels balanced, no shake. My
shocks leak oil (don't yours and yours?) so when a bit of body shake is
evident I know that it is time to top up the shocks.
