Whoops, I goofed again. The problem turned out to be a very stiff clutch
pedal. Grease evidently wasn't getting to the outside pedal shaft bushing for
some reason. A good soak in penetrating oil took care of that. The cable is
now working splendidly. (But it is difficult to install because it is so
stiff.)
