What Don Thigpen told you to do is the correct way to cut a taper without a taper attachment. But if this taper doesn't need to be that close you can set your compound and cut a taper as far as your compound will let you then back it up and move your carriage and pick it up again and do the same thing until you have it the length you need than blend it in with a file and emory cloth and you are set to go.
