John: You are correct that slowing will take longer in neutral. However
slowing and making the turn out at speeds I run (best of 208 at Bonneville,
186 or so at El Mirage) has never been a problem.
I do believe that using the engine to help slow the car at those speeds
unnecessarily stresses the rods in tension when they are built mostly for
stress on compression. It also gives me a much better plug to look at and
pretend I see something important.
All in all, I see no reason not to disengage the motor as soon as I can, and
some possible gain in doing so.                          Rich Fox
