Ron;
A few months ago there were some new surplus military vests like the one
you described being sold pretty cheap on eBay. I thought about buying
one until I saw that they were all one size- Small. They would have been
perfect for keeping cool.

There was a couple of guys in the pits at Speed Week selling a vest
that
had tubing sewn into it. Cold water was pumped through it out of a small
tank of water (ice?) The tubing was like medical grade and just plugged
together. I presume that if you didn't want the weight or power drain ,
the
tank could be portable with a battery pack to keep you cool until ready
to
leave the line, then you'd be too busy to worry about it.
The first time I saw anything like that was in the mid 80's. There
were a
couple of guys running a Mark III Lincoln that had made one. They said
it
was just like sitting in AC. Don't know if it was the same guys or not.
It helps quite a bit to put cold, wet paper towels or rags under the
wrist
bands of the fire suit. Al did that for years in his liner.
Just a few thoughts, I know what you mean by discomforted and age.
