Coat your connections with outdoor grease. My father worked for the Toronto Transit Commission for 40 years including when the TTC ran the Toronto Island Ferries. They have this wonderful grease used for lubricating anything that sees weather and it comes in spray cans. I used it on the hinges of my pickup truck. It keeps out corrosion and sticks like shit to hair!
