check your datalogger. If you are having drivewheel slip, some (or all) of
it may be due to variations in either friction or height of the racing
surface. If you use a heavier flywheel, the motor can't accelerate as much
between race surface "good spots"-- thus, less wheelslip, and a higher
average wheel thrust against the salt (= "you go faster"). If the car has a
tendency to spinout, a heavier flywheel may lessen that somewhat, also
(depending on whether drivewheel spin is a significant factor in the
spinouts).
(Some people consider a heavy flywheel one of the best TRACTION CONTROL
devices.)
If you never have wheelslip (and aren't worried about potential fatigue of
the aluminum flywheel), I can't think of any advantage to changing to a
heavier one.

I am replacing clutch, TO bearing(hydraulic), etc. right now,
and wonder about the merits of replacing the flywheel also. I
have a billet alum. 11 lb flywheel on it now, developed for
SCCA's Corvette Challenge series of the late 80's, and
actually have been very happy with it. Obviously it builds
revs very quickly, and tends to make the engine more
responsive. However, since we are not really drag racing here
(yes, I know, some will argue we are) are there any merits in
going to a steel flywheel while I have it apart? All opinions
welcome.
