I did exactly that for several days with my '89 T-Bird. The IAC failed
and I put a piece of AL soda can between the gasket and the IAC.
No unexpected problems. (idle speed varied quite a bit with different loads)
I'm no expert but one of the keys to EFI flexibility is determined by
whether the system uses a MAFS or a map in the controller.
