In three weeks time a few British Speed racers will be at Maxton with
ECTA.....well just two to be precise.
After all the chat here and on the other list about International
co-operation it is now to happen on the Maxton Monster Mile on the East
coast, as it has done at Bonneville.......
Two members of this list in particular are responsible for making this
project work - Keith Turk and John Beckett - and they have my thanks for
grasping the project I outlined a short while ago.
Keith is thrashing like mad to repair the So-Al special, so that it can be
driven by a foreigner!!
Don Wales, Grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell (first record at 300mph on
Bonneville) and nephew and Godson of Donald Campbell, will be making
licencing passes on the concrete at Maxton and will it seems be wearing the
infamous purple suit..........
Don holds UK speed records in electric vehicles set on airfield and beach
courses, but with his sights set on further USA runs in 2002, when the
target has to be 250 and then 300mph, Maxton speeds in the Camaro are a
good starting point.
John Beckett and fellow ECTA officials are facilitating this entry (as well
as the whole meet) and there will be talks during the period of the event
about transatlantic co-operation between ECTA and a planned UK event to a
'similar' format. I will be meeting with John and others to see how rules
can be framed that can work anywhere in the world for the 'shorter course'
length. The input from earlier in the year will be used in these
discussions. We may not get everything fully sorted in four days but a lot
can be achieved in face to face talks.
Whilst Don has business commitments that do not allow an extended stay
beyond the weekend of 28th/30th September, I am making the trip as a
vacation. So I will be in the USA from 25th September thro' 10th October
in the Carolinas and Georgia. Do not know where after Maxton, but it
should be a great experience as previous trips have been to Nevada/Utah. I
hope to meet up with many East side racers who are on this list.
See many of you soon.
Malcolm Pittwood, Derby, England.
