Keith,
The IC engine still drives the rear wheels (or whatever else you want to
drive), the turbine is there to use some of the energy in the exhaust gases
that would otherwise be wasted. The turbine is connected to the crank by a
variable speed grear system to allow it to run at or near its optimum speed
at all times.
There were a number of productin US aero-engines using the system and some
development engines in the UK (these never made production due to a
government decision to put all future development into gas turbines despite
the compound engines showing a far better fuel economy than the GTs
especially in the marine field).
