Hi Greg and group,
>From the book Bonneville Salt Flats, " The twin tank experiment from Howard
Johanson was a brilliant idea that performed atrociously. Its lackluster
performance was a direct result of a last-minute, cobble-together construction
job. Running with engine in one compartment and the driver in another , it
make an initial run of 147 miles per hour, but then scared the stink out of
on-lookers every time thereafter when, spinning out of control and unbalanced,
it dug into the salt surface. Johanson discovered he had serious front end
suspension problems, and officials withdrew the car from running for the
safety of all concerned."
I'm not saying you can't do it, but you asked if anyone had tried this before.
On the video "Potpourri 2,1948-1964 Hot Roddding The Way It Was"
by Don Tuttle & Joel Gruzen, there is some discussion of the mentioned tanker
and Don & Joel speak about Howard's creation in more complementary terms.
There is even another dual tank car shown later on. Phil
