Dennis,

Based on your description it could very well be the throw out bearing. A
friend recently replaced the clutch on his Healey and discovered the throw
out bearing had completely failed. All of the throw out bearing wear
material was gone and the remaining metal part of the TOB would push
against the clutch pressure plate.

Do you hear any grinding sounds when pushing in the clutch with the engine
running?
